Tractate Derekh Eretz Rabbah
Concerning flatterers, liars and workers of iniquity,13So GRA. V repeats from §1, ‘Sadducees, informers, flatterers’ and adds ‘profaners of God’s Name’. Instead of the Scriptural passages which are cited GRA substitutes Job 13, 16, and Ps. 101, 7, in agreement with Soṭah 42a (Sonc. ed., p. 206). Scripture declares, The wicked shall return to the nether-world,14Ps. 9, 18. and it further states, That which is crooked cannot be made straight.15Eccl. 1, 15.

Rebbi Ḥuna in the name of Rebbi Aḥa234In the printed edition of the Babli (60b), this homily of R. Aḥa is described as having R. Levi as first author. There are many other names given in manuscripts of the Babli.: (Ps. 101:1) “A song of David. Kindness and justice I shall sing, to You, o Eternal, I shall chant.” David said before the Holy One, praise to Him: If You act in kindness towards me, I shall sing. If You act in judgment towards me, I shall sing. In any case, I shall chant.

We have learnt there:16Ḥag. 11b (Sonc. ed., p. 59). Whoever speculates upon four things, it were better17Ḥag. reads ‘pity’ instead of ‘see’ (loc. cit., n. 5). for him had he not come into the world, viz.: What is above, what is beneath, what is before, what is after.18These terms have a temporal significance as to what happened before the Creation and what will happen in the hereafter. For another interpretation, cf. loc. cit., nn. 6-8. This may be compared with the statement, ‘Not only does he pride himself over his fellow-creatures but also over his Creator’. If being of unclean limbs he rebels against his Creator, how much more so if a perfumed odour filled him! This is what the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Hiram, king of Tyre,19Cf. B.B. 75a (Sonc. ed., p. 302). Ezek. 28 is addressed against the Prince of Tyre, identified in the Talmud with king Hiram. The Prince is tauntingly asked whether he could compare himself with Adam, who enjoyed the material delights of Eden (ibid. 13). ‘[At the Creation] I looked upon you [observing your future arrogance] and created the excretory organs of man’.20To curb human pride.
The question was asked: May one pride himself over the agents21Explained by ‘The heart and the eye are the two agents of sin’ (j.Ber. I, 5, 3C). who do unworthy deeds by not responding to them or speaking to them? Come and hear: [It is stated,] Whoso is haughty of eye and proud of heart, him will I not suffer.22Ps. 101, 5. One should respond to them with lax lips but not with levity.

When Rabban Joḥanan ben Zakkai desired that it rained, he said to his barber: stand in front of the Temple: because my rabbi needs to be groomed and is not strong enough to suffer; then immediately it started to rain. When Rav Ada bar Aḥawa desired that it rained, he took off his shoe. If he took both off the world was swamped. There were building collapses; Rav let one of his students sit there until they had emptied the house. After that one left the house, the house collapsed. But some are saying, this was Rav Ada bar Aḥawah126In the Babli 20b told of Rav Huna. But the follow-up is there also in the name of Rav Ada bar Ahawa.. The Sages sent and asked him, what good deeds did you do? He told them, never came a person earlier than me to the synagogue, and I never left a person in the synagogue before I left. I did not walk four cubits without Torah127But mentally repeating subjects of Torah study; a necessity as long as oral law never was written down., but never mentioned words of the Torah at a smelly place128A formal prohibition (cf. Berakhot 2:3).. I never prepared my bed and slept deep sleep129In order to study Torah “day and night”., and never walked among the colleagues130When the students were sitting on the ground, the teacher may not pass through them since it would look as if he stepped on their heads; he has to go along the wall.. I never called a colleague by a nickname131A grave sin; Babli Bava meṣia` 58b., and never enjoyed the calamity of a colleague. The curse of a colleague never came on my bed132But I forgave him immediately., and I never went in public to a person who was in debt to me133Not to embarrass him if he could not pay.. I never was angry with my family, to fulfill what was said134Ps. 101:2., I shall walk in the simplicity of my heart in the midst of my house.
