시편 138:6 미드라쉬: Ein Yaakov (Glick Edition), Otzar Midrashim, Midrash Tanchuma & Mekhilta DeRabbi Shimon Ben Yochai

Ein Yaakov (Glick Edition)

R. Elazar said: "And one who possesses haughtiness deserves to be cut off like a [grove] tree devoted to idolatry; for concerning presumption it is written (Is. 10, 33) And those of towering growth shall he hewn down, and concerning a [grove] tree, it is written (Dept. 7, 5) And their groves shall ye not turn down. R. Elazar said further: "Anyone who possesses haughtiness will not enjoy resurrection; for it is said (Is. 26, 19) Awake and sing ye, that dwell in the dust; i.e., it is not written that lie in the dust but that dwell in the dust, we infer this to mean he who dwelt in dust (lowered himself) during his life." R. Elazar said further: "Anyone who possesses haughtiness causes the Shechina to lament over him, as it is said (Ps. 138, 6) For though the Lord be high, yet regardeth He the lowly, and the haughty He knoweth from, afar." R. Avira, and according to others R. Elazar expounded: "Come and see how the custom of the Holy One, praised be He! is unlike the custom of frail man. The custom of frail men is that a great man will look upon another great man but a great one will not look upon a lowly one; the custom of the Holy One, praised be He! however, is not so, for He is elevated and yet seeth the lowly, as it is said For though the Lord be high yet regardeth He the lowly, and the haughty He knoweth from afar."

Otzar Midrashim

13) And also, come and hear the humility of Moshe, for when the Holy Blessed One said to him, "Make the Tent of Meeting," he did so. And when it was done, out of the great humility that was within him he went outside. The Holy Blessed One said to him, "Why did you go outside? Go, it is pleasant that You minister to me!" And from where did the Holy Blessed One call him and say thus to him? As it is said, "And he called to Moshe, and the LORD spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying..." (Leviticus 1:1). And so too the Torah testified that he was humble, as it is said, "And the man Moshe was very humble" (Numbers 12:3). Thus, Moshe merited to be given law by his hand, and for the Presence to dwell over him, for thus said Isaiah, "The spirit of the LORD is upon me, thus the LORD anointed me to herald to the humble" (Isaiah 61:1). What is written is not "to herald to the faithful," but "to herald to the humble." From here we derive that humility is the greatest commandment in the universe. The Holy Blessed One gazed upon all the mountains and found none as befitting to give the Torah on and for the Presence to dwell on like Mt. Sinai, and why did Mt. Sinai merit all this? Because it lowered itself, for when it saw that Mt. Hermon and Mt. Sirion were provoking each other — one saying "He'll dwell on me!" and the other saying "no, He'll dwell on me!" — when Sinai saw that they were provoking each other and increasing themselves, it lowered itself. Therefore the Holy Blessed One saw its lowliness and had His Presence dwell upon it, since God is high and exalted, "seeing the lowly, and loftily perceiving from afar." (Psalms 138:6)

Midrash Tanchuma

Our sages stated in the name of R. Eleazar the son of Pedat: The Holy One, blessed be He, likens Himself to the humblest of men in seven places in the Torah. It is written: For the Lord your God, He is God of Gods, and the Lord of Lords, the great God, the mighty and the awful (Deut. 10:17), and this is followed by the verse: He doth execute justice for the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger (ibid., v. 18). It says likewise: For though the Lord be high, yet regardeth He the lowly (Ps. 138:6), and also: Thus saith the High and Lofty One that inhabiteth eternity and whose name is holy: I dwell in the high and holy places, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble (Isa. 57:15). Similarly, Scripture says: Thus saith the Lord: The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool (ibid. 66:1), and that is followed by: And on this man will I look, even on him that is poor and of a contrite spirit and trembleth at My word (ibid., v. 2). Elsewhere it is written: The Lord is King forever and ever. The nations are perished out of His land (Ps. 10:16), and that is followed by the verse: Lord, Thou hast heard the desire of the humble (ibid., v. 17). Scripture says: Sing unto God, sing praises to His Name. Extol Him that rideth upon the skies, whose name is the Lord; and exult ye before Him (ibid. 68:5), and after that is written: A father of the fatherless, the judge of the widows (ibid., v. 6). Likewise the verse Who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is, who keepeth truth forever, who executeth justice for the oppressed (Ps. 146:6–7) is followed by: He upholdeth the fatherless, and the widow; and the way of the wicked He maketh crooked (ibid., v. 9).
