Another interpretation: “This month shall be for you [the first of months]” (Exodus 12:2) – that is what is written: “In his days let the righteous flourish, and abundance of peace, until the moon is no more” (Psalms 72:7). Before the Holy One blessed be He took Israel out of Egypt, He made it known to them by allusion that their royalty would endure for them for thirty generations, as it is stated: “This month shall be for you the first of months.” The month is thirty days, and your royalty will be thirty generations. On the first of Nisan, the moon begins to shine, and it gradually increases its light until the fifteenth day, and its orb becomes full. From fifteen until thirty days, its light wanes, and on the thirtieth it is not seen. So Israel, for fifteen generations from Abraham until Solomon. Abraham began to give light, as it is stated: “Who has risen from the east, righteousness attends his footsteps” (Isaiah 41:2). Isaac came, and he also gave light, as it is stated: “Light is sown for the righteous” (Psalms 97:11). Jacob came and added light, as it is stated: “The light of Israel shall be fire” (Isaiah 10:17). And then Judah, Peretz, Ḥetzron, Ram, Aminadav, Naḥshon, Salmon, Boaz. Oved, Yishai, David.
When Solomon came, the orb of the moon became full, as it is stated: “Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king” (I Chronicles 29:23). Can a person sit on the throne of the Holy One blessed be He, of whom it is stated: “His throne was fiery flames” (Daniel 7:9)? Rather, just as the Holy One blessed be He rules from one end of the world to the other end, and He rules over all the kings, as it is stated: “All the kings of the earth shall give thanks to You” (Psalms 138:4), so, Solomon ruled from one end of the world to the other end, as it is stated: “And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon…and each of them brought his gift” (II Chronicles 9:23–24). That is why it is stated: “Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king.” The garb of the Holy One blessed be He is majesty and glory, and He granted Solomon royal majesty, as it is stated: “He bestowed upon him royal majesty” (I Chronicles 29:25). Regarding the throne of the Holy One blessed be He it is written: “As for the likeness of their faces, the face of a man, and the face of a lion […and the face of an ox from the left for the four of them]” (Ezekiel 1:10), and regarding Solomon it is written: “And on the borders that were between the frames were lions, oxen” (I Kings 7:29), and another verse says: “Like the work of the chariot wheel” (I Kings 7:33). No evil touches the throne of the Holy One blessed be He, as it is stated: “Evil will not reside with You” (Psalms 5:5); regarding Solomon, it is written: “There is neither adversary nor evil occurrence” (I Kings 5:18). The Holy One blessed be He made six heavens, and He sits in the seventh, and regarding the throne of Solomon it is written: “The throne had six steps” (I Kings 10:19), and he sat on the seventh step.
The orb of the moon thereby became full, and from there the kings began diminishing: “The son of Solomon, Reḥavam” (I Chronicles 3:10), the son of Reḥavam, Aviya, his son Asa, Yehoshafat, Yehoram, Ahaziah, Yoash, Amatzyahu, Uzziah, Yotam, Hezekiah, Menashe, Amon, Josiah, Yehoyakim. When Zedekiah came, as it is written: “He blinded the eyes of Zedekiah” (Jeremiah 52:11), the light of the moon was lacking. All those years, even though Israel was sinning, the patriarchs were praying for them and making peace between Israel and the Omnipresent, as it is stated: “Let the mountains bear peace to the people” (Psalms 72:3), and the mountains are nothing other than the patriarchs, as it is stated: “Hear, O heights, the Lord’s grievance” (Micah 6:2). Until when were the patriarchs praying for them? Until Zedekiah lost his eyes and the Temple was destroyed, as it is stated: “And abundance of peace, until the moon is no more,” until thirty generations that Israel had royalty. From that moment until now, who makes peace for Israel? It is the Lord, as it is stated: “May the Lord lift His countenance to you and grant you peace” (Numbers 6:26).

[2] Another interpretation: "And it came to pass at that time that Judah went down." (Hosea 12:1) This is referring to the tribe of Judah. "Ephraim surrounds me with falsehood." (Ibid.) This is in reference to what is written, "They have denied the Lord and said, 'He is not!'" (Jeremiah 5:12) "And with deceit, the House of Israel." (Hosea 12:1) The Holy One, blessed be He, said, "Even with their deceit, they call upon Me," as it is written, "Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit." (Jeremiah 9:4) Therefore, they are subject to descent. "Judah still goes down with them to battle against the enemy." (Hosea 12:2) Come and see how I cherish you, that even when you sin and are subject to descent, I am with you, as it is written, "Judah still goes down with them." This is like what I said to Jacob, "I will go down with you to Egypt and I will also surely bring you up." (Genesis 46:4) Similarly, in Babylon, I sent you into exile for your benefit, as it is written, "And when they ascend, so do I." (Isaiah 43:14) As it is written regarding Samuel, "And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him." (I Samuel 3:19) Similarly, regarding Solomon, "And the Lord magnified Solomon exceedingly on high." (I Chronicles 29:25) And regarding David, "David went and became great, and the Lord of Hosts was with him." (II Samuel 5:10) When you are in a state of descent, I am with you, as it is written, "Judah still goes down with them." In every place where these two tribes meet, they hate each other, and they are antagonistic to each other. Judah and Joseph are different from each other in this regard. And the children of Israel asked, "Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?" (Judges 1:1) And the Lord said, "Judah shall go up." (Judges 1:2) And what is written? "And the House of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them." (Judges 1:22) And it is written, Ephraim became a trained heifer, But preferred to thresh; [i *Lit. “passed over the comeliness of its neck.”placed a yoke Upon her sleek neck.-i] I will make Ephraim [*Taking rkb in the sense of the Arabic krb.do advance plowing;-j] Judah [*Emendation yields “Israel.”] shall do [main] plowing! Jacob shall do final plowing!(Hosea 10:11) You say that just as the Anointed One who will arise from Joseph and the Anointed One who will arise from Judah are not jealous of each other, as it is written: "Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not harass Ephraim" (Isaiah 11:13), so too will the antagonism between the sects come to an end in the future when they are united. However, in this world, since they are not connected to each other, they envy each other. As long as they are in this state of descent, they remain lowly. But in the future, when they are connected to each other, they will rise up, as it is written: "The children of Judah and the children of Israel will be gathered together" (Hosea 2:2), and at that time they will ascend from the earth (Hosea 2:2). God said, "Now that you are united, you have risen up, and I am also elevated with you," as David said: "The princes of the peoples gather together, even the people of the God of Abraham" (Psalm 47:10), for which reason it is said, "Judah will yet go up to God." When the nations rise up, Israel descends, and when Israel rises up, the nations descend. In the days of Rehoboam, when they sinned, they descended and the nations ascended, as it is written: "Now it came to pass in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem" (1 Kings 14:25). In the days of Hosea, when they sinned, they descended and the nations ascended, as it is written: "In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant" (2 Kings 24:1). In the days of Jehoiakim and Zedekiah, when they sinned, they descended and the nations ascended, as it is written: "Now it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it" (2 Kings 25:1). However, in the future, the opposite will happen. As it is written, "Son of man, wail over the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down" (Ezekiel 32:18), and "I will bring you down with those who descend into the Pit" (Ezekiel 26:20), and Israel will ascend, as it is written, "The children of Judah and the children of Israel will be gathered together" (Hosea 2:2), and the Holy One, blessed be He, will be with them, as it is written, "God is greatly exalted over all gods" (Psalm 97:9).

Another thing, glory and splendor are fitting for shame. Flesh and blood, if one is strong, they are not attractive, and if they are attractive, they are not strong. But the Holy One, blessed be He, is not so; He possesses both glory and splendor. He gave glory to Moses, as it is said (Numbers 27:20), "You shall invest him with some of your splendor." And He gave splendor to Joshua, as it is said (Deuteronomy 33:17), "His firstborn ox, majesty is his." And He gave glory to Solomon, as it is said (1 Chronicles 29:25), "The Lord made Solomon exceedingly great in the sight of all Israel and bestowed upon him royal majesty." The Holy One, blessed be He, said, "In the future, I will give both of them to the King Messiah," as it is said (Psalm 21:4), "For You set on his head a crown of fine gold." And not only to the King Messiah does He give them, but to anyone who toils in Torah, as it is said (Psalm 111:2), "Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them." And the only works that are mentioned are the Tablets, as it is said (Exodus 32:16), "The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved upon the tablets." And for their reward, it is said (Psalm 111:3), "Splendor and majesty are His work, and His righteousness endures forever." Be clothed in glory and splendor.
