Tosefta Demai

A town that has in it Jews and Gentiles, guardians of Jews (see Psalms 121:4) and guardians of Gentiles, those who tithe and those who do not tithe, [or] guardians who tithe and guardians who do not tithe, they have the right to say, one to the other, "the north of the town is our portion and the south [of the town] is your portion." [But] if they started calculating (cf. Bava Batra 78b:13), it is forbidden [to say this].

Tosefta Sotah

The "wakers" (Sot. 9:10) -- these were the Levites, who would stand on the platform and say*שהיו עומדים על הדוכן ואומרים (GR"A) (Ps. 44:2), "Awake! Why do You slumber, O Lord, etc.?" Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai said to them, "And is there really sleep before Him? And does it not already say (Ps. 121:4), 'Behold, the Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps!' Rather, whenever [the Children of] Israel are in a state of pain and the idolaters are in a state of ease, thus it may be said*כך נאמר (GR"A), so to speak, 'Awake! Why do You slumber?'" The "knockers" -- these were those who struck*alt., שֶׁהָיוּ מְסָרְטִין, "who would scratch" (Sot. 48a:8); alt., שהיו חובטין אותו במקלות, "who would beat it with sticks" (Sot. 48a:9, GR"A) the calf between its horns in the manner of idolaters. Yochanan ben Zakkai said to them, "Until when will you feed tereifot to the Altar?"
