The wooden platform [erected for the portion read by the king (Sot. 7:8)], they would make in the Temple Courtyard and he sits on it. Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov says, on the Temple Mount, as it is said (Neh. 8:3-6), "He read it facing the plaza that was in front of the Water Gate, from early morning until midday, etc. And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden toward that they made him for that purpose, etc. And Ezra opened the scroll in the sight of all the people, etc. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, 'Amen, Amen', etc." And it says (2 Chron. 23:13), "And [Athaliah] looked, and there was the king standing on his platform at the entrance, and the officers and the trumpeters [by the king]." That same day, the Kohanim stand at the gates and at the breaches (Mid. 2:3), with golden trumpets in their hands. They blow tekiah, and teruah, and tekiah. [As for] any priest without a trumpet in his hand, they would say, "This one is like someone who is not a priest." There would be a great [financial] reward for the people of Jerusalem, who would hire out trumpets for a golden dinar. That same day, Rabbi Tarfon saw a lame man (=חיגר (see Hag. 1:1)) blow teruah on the trumpet, and from that they said that a lame man can blow [the trumpet] in the Temple. § In the name of (משום) Rabbi Natan they said, "Israel was liable for the destruction, for they defiled themselves for Agrippas the King" (see Sot. 7:8).
