O temor do SENHOR é odiar o mal; a soberba, e a arrogância, e o mau caminho, e a boca perversa, eu os odeio.
Mei HaShiloach
... The three plagues in this sidra, locusts, darkness and the [death of the] firstborn correspond to self-centeredness, superiority and bad ways. Bad ways are miserliness, appetite and obstinacy regarding eating - and it is against these that the plague given was locusts. Superiority, which is the raising of oneself above someone else to whom respect should be shown - it is against this that the plague given was darkness, as it is written "one who curses his father or mother, his light [will go out when darkness comes.]" (Proverbs 20:20) Truly, even though a person should only listen to God, and a father and a mother are only a small piece of a person, when one's parents are trying to put their child in the ways of God, one should listen to them very much and submit to them, and one with superiority refuses to submit, and regarding that it says "will go out". Self-centeredness is [one who feels] pride regarding oneself above and beyond what is found in oneself - corresponding to this is the plague of the firstborn, because the expression firstborn points to raising oneself beyond who one is.
