Mussar sobre Provérbios 14:12

And the main thing in order to give satisfaction to our father in heaven is to try with all our strength and might to teach our children Torah. And how good is the portion and how pleasing the lot if one’s children are torah scholars! That person will rejoice from the “offspring of his loins” [i.e. his children] in this world and in the world to come. And at the very least he must give his life and try with all his soul and might to ensure his children are not ignoramuses, for great is the evil of ignoramuses without understanding. For “there is a way which is straight in man’s view which ultimately leads to death” (Proverbs 14:12, Proverbs 16:25). And “a boor cannot be sin-fearing, nor can an ignoramus be pious” (Avot 2:5). And if he isn’t able to merit that all of his children have the crown of torah, at least he should have to himself one torah-scholar child for whom torah is his profession [i.e. that he studies torah full-time]. And he should pour out his soul before Hashem [to pray] that he has children who are masters of Torah, and flawless in their character and values. And at times he should fast for this, so that his sins do not prevent the good [i.e. Torah] from [coming to] his children. And most of all one needs to keep his eyes on his daughters, for man doesn’t know what the share of their portion will be. Therefore he must be careful to distance them from all bad traits, teach them all types of women’s crafts, accustom them to minimal sleep and to all good traits, and advise them well in how to act with their husbands in the upright and good way such that they find favor in the eyes of G-d and their husbands.
