Beside streams of water (עַֽל־פַּלְגֵי־מָ֥יִם - al palgei mayim): Means beside one of the streams. Similar [constructions where a plural denotes one instance within a category include]: "to the innermost parts (yarketei - plural construct) of the ship" (Jonah 1:5) [referring to one area]; "and he was buried in the cities (be-arei - plural construct) of Gilead" (Judges 12:7) [meaning in one city]; "son of she-asses" (atonot - plural) (Zechariah 9:9) [likely referring to the foal of one specific donkey]. And some say (v'yesh omrim): That the meaning of "its fruit" (piryo) is analogous to "children of youth" (Psalm 127:4) [interpreting the fruit metaphorically as descendants].

In them hath He set a tabernacle for the sun: – For the sun He hath set a tabernacle and a place in the spheres. The enumeration refers to the sun because he is the great light and because there obtains to men from him a greater benefit than from the rest of the stars through his light and heat, to men and to the rest of living things and to the plants. And when he says in them, he means in one of them, as he was buried “in (one of) the cities of Gilead” (Judges 12:7); and this (location) is the fourth of the seven spheres in which are the seven planets. He says in them, because these stars are fixed in the body of the spheres. And so it says (Gen. 1:17): “And God set them in the firmament of the heaven” and it does not say upon the firmament. And so, too, in the words of our Rabbis of blessed memory (Midrash Tanhuma, 2 Gen. v.), “The stars are fixed in the firmament like the nails which are fixed in a door.”

ולא יהיה בבני ישראל נגף, “and the there will not be a plague among the Children of Israel,” even a single one of them. We can find similar constructions in Exodus 21,11: ואם שלש אלה לא יעשה לה, “and if (her master) does not do one of these three economically constructive actions for her, etc.” (Exodus 21,11) Compare also Judges 12,7, “he was buried in one of the towns of the region of Gilead.” [All the people of surrounding towns took part in Yiftach’s burial. Ed.]

She became the subject of a law. Legislation was enacted prohibiting any repetition of this, for, had he approached Pinchos, or had Pinchos approached him, he would have released him from his vow.24By informing him that a human being cannot be designated as an offering. But they refused to humble themselves,25Pinchas, because it was Yiftoch who required his services; Yiftoch, because he was the supreme commander. (Yalkut, 68) and were, thus, both responsible for her ruin. They were punished. The Divine Presence departed from Pinchos, as it is said in Divrei Hayamim,26Divrei Hayamim 1, 9:20. "Adonoy was with him previously." We learn that he was not with him later. And Yiftoch was afflicted with ulcerations and the loss of his limbs, as it is said,27Below, 12:7. "He was buried in the cities of Gilod."28Individual limbs, like the entire body, require burial. The plural usage, “cities”, teaches that his burial took place in a number of cities—wherever his limbs fell. (Yalkut, ibid.) Another interpretation: "She became the subject of a law in Yisroel" relates to the following passage.29She was the subject of a law requiring the daughters of Yisroel to visit her yearly.
