Shem MiShmuel
In the Tur (Orach Chaim 490) in the name of Rav Hai Gaon, [it is written] that is for this that we read the haftara [that begins] on the day that Gog will arrive (Ezekiel 38:18) [on Sukkot]: It is because the war of Gog and Magog will be on Sukkot. And it appears that a reason can be given for the matter, according to that which was said by his holy honor, my father, our master, and teacher, the rabbi, may the memory of the righteous be a blessing for life in the world to come — that all of Japheth's merit was from that which it is written, And Shem and Japheth took the cloak (Genesis 9:23). And they, may their memory be blessed, said that the reason that it is written, vayikach [took, in the singular], and not vayikachu [in the plural], is because the main taking was by Shem, while Japheth was just dragged along after him. So it was assistance that lacked substance. And since Japheth did not do it from his heart's desire, but rather on the surface [literally, externally], hence his hold is only upon the external [destructive] forces. To here are his words that are needed for our discussion.
