“Both great and small” [1:5]. Here one asks a question. Why does it say that he made a banquet for the great and important people and later for the simple ordinary people? Concerning Lot it is written, “both small and great” [Genesis 19:11], the small first and then the great. The reason is, Ahasuerus wanted to do what was correct for each person and it is correct that the most senior and important should be honored first at the banquet.

The Yalkut writes, “he displayed” [1:4], that he donned the garments of the High Priest and sat at the banquet, allowing his treasures to be displayed.7B. Megillah, 12a. The Jews saw the vessels from the Temple and the Jews began to cry and wanted to leave. Ahasuerus said that a separate place should be prepared for them so that they would not see the vessels. Ahasuerus found that Nebuchadnezzar had hidden great treasures in the ground.8Yalkut Shimoni, Esther, Remez, 1047.
