Komentaryo sa Ester 4:1: Rashi & Tze'enah Ure'enah

Rashi

Mordechai was apprized. The Master of Dreams told him1He was told by means of a dream and not by רוח הקדש [The Holy Spirit], a higher form of prophecy, because “Shushan was in confusion,” and רוח הקדש [The Holy Spirit] dwells only in the midst of joy. Alternatively, Eliyahu the prophet told him. that the celestial beings had consented to this [decree], because they had prostrated themselves to the idol in the days of Nevuchadnetzar, and because they had enjoyed Achashveirosh’s feast.2See Esther Rabbah 7:13 and Maseches Megillah 12a.

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“And Mordecai knew” [4:1]. The prophet Elijah came to Mordecai and told him the secret that it was inscribed in Heaven to destroy all the Jews, heaven forbid.35Targum Rishon, Esther 4:1. Mordecai asked if it was sealed with glue. Elijah the prophet responded that it was indeed sealed with glue. Therefore, do penance and the Holy One will tear up his signature.

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“And he cried out loudly and bitterly” [4:1]. Mordecai tore his clothes and let out a great and bitter outcry. That is, two sorts of outcry, one of misfortune, to destroy, heaven forbid, all of Israel, and the second was that the misfortune had come because of him, that he did not bow down to Haman.
