Komentaryo sa Genesis 28:10: Tze'enah Ure'enah, Rashi, Alshekh & Chizkuni

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“Jacob left Beer-Sheva and set out for Haran” [28:10]. Jacob left Beer-Sheva and went to Haran. Rashi asks a question here. Why does it have to say that he went out to Haran? The explanation is that the Torah teaches us that when a righteous person leaves a city, then the beauty and the light from the city leaves with him, since the righteous one is the light and beauty of the city.1Rashi, Genesis, 28:10.

Tze'enah Ure'enah

Hizkuni writes. It says this, that he left Beer-Sheva. They used to swear there all the time. That is why the city is called Beer-Sheva, because of the swearing. Jacob was afraid that they would make him swear that he did not take away the blessing through deceit. Therefore, Jacob left Beer-Sheva quickly.2Hizkuni, Genesis, 28:10.

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“He set out for Haran” [28:10]. He went from Beer-Sheva to Haran in one day. Our sages said that it is a seventeen-day journey to go from Beer-Sheva to Haran and Jacob made this journey in twelve hours.3Ibid.

Rashi

ויצא יעקב AND JACOB WENT OUT— Owing to the fact that it was because the daughters of Canaan were evil in the eyes of Isaac, his father, that Esau went to Ishmael, Scripture broke off the narrative contained, in the section dealing with Jacob, and wrote (verse 6 till verse 9), “Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed [Jacob] etc., that the daughters of Canaan were evil in the eyes of Isaac and so he went to Ishmael” and when it finished this (the account of Esau’s further marriage) it resumes the previous subject.
