At tinipon ni Laban ang lahat ng mga tao sa lugar na iyon, at naghanda siya ng isang piging.

ויאסוף לבן....ויעש משתה, Lavan assembled the people from Charan and arranged a feast. Lavan was a swindler, and that is why he is always referred to by our sages as “Lavan the swindler.” He planned to make Yaakov drunk in order to deceive him so that he could not tell the difference between Rachel and Leah. If we needed proof for this interpretation, we only need to look at when he gave Rachel to Yaakov a week later, when he did not spend a penny on making a celebration.

ויאסוף To gather, This comes to show the custom that was in the world, and still is today, to do a feast and celebration for weddings. The groom does it, or the father of the bride or groom does it. And so the Sages instituted the Wedding Meal and 7 days of celebration after a wedding because it says "מלא שבוע זאת" "Fulfill this one's week" (See below Genesis 29:27)

“Laban gathered all the people of the place” [29:22]. He gathered the whole city, made a feast and said to them. Do not betray me by telling Jacob that I will give him Leah this night. They said: it is good. Laban said to them: give me pledges that you will keep your word. They immediately gave him their garments as a pledge. Laban went and pawned the clothes for wine and he honored them with their own money. They were very happy and led Leah to sleep with Jacob and sang songs of praise. They gave to understand with their singing that this was Leah. The word, songs of praise [hilulah], consists of two words, that is, she is Leah [hi Leah]. Jacob did not understand this.54Genesis Rabbah, 70.19.
