Komentaryo sa Levitico 19:32: Tze'enah Ure'enah, Rashi, Kitzur Ba'al HaTurim & Kli Yakar

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“You shall rise before the aged” [19:32]. When you see an old person, you should stand up, even if he is an ignoramus. When a scholar goes before you, even if he is young and not old, you should stand up and honor him.19Bahya, Leviticus, 19:32.

Tze'enah Ure'enah

Therefore, it is written here, “you should fear the Holy One” [19:32]. You should fear the Holy One. That is to say, if you will close your eyes and make yourself as if you do not see him coming, expecting that you will not have to stand for him. Therefore, it is written, fear the Holy One, who knows well what you thought, and He will not forgive you.20Rashi, Leviticus, 19:32.

Rashi

THOU SHALT RISE UP BEFORE A HOARY HEAD — One might think this reverence is also due to an ignorant old man! Scripture however says זקן — "thou shalt honour the face of the ״זקן — and זקן denotes only one who has acquired wisdom (Sifra, Kedoshim, Chapter 7 12;Kiddushin 32b).
