Komentaryo sa Ruth 4:18: Tze'enah Ure'enah & Rashi

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“These are the generations of Peretz” [4:18]. Our sages say that this verse gives us his lineage from Peretz because the people associated him [David] with Ruth the Moabite. Therefore, the verse associates him with Peretz who was descended from Judah. The people argued with David and said to him, you are descended from Ruth the Moabite. David responded: are you not descended from someone who was married to two sisters? This was Jacob the Patriarch. Look who is your leader. Also, Tamar who married Judah, your ancestor, was he not from a family that was unfit? Our sages say that Boaz was very righteous and abrogated the famine with his prayers, and he had a son called Obed. This Obed had a son called Jesse who was very righteous and the angel of death could do nothing to him because of his great righteousness. He would not have died except for the sin caused by the snake and Adam and Eve who ate from the apple.79B. Shabbat, 55b.

Tze'enah Ure'enah

Our sages say that the word Toldot is not written with two “vavs.” However, when God created heaven and earth it is written, “These are the generations of heaven and earth” [Gen. 2:4], with two “vavs.” Concerning Peretz, it is also written, “These are the generations of Peretz” [4:18] with two “vavs.” On the sixth day, Adam sinned and six things were taken away from him. His life was shortened, his shining disappeared, his height was lowered, the earth was diminished and these six things will come again through Peretz, from whom will come the Messiah, through whom all of this will come again. We learn this from the superfluous “vavs.”80Yalkut Shimoni, Ruth, Remez 609.

Rashi

These are the generations of Peretz. Since [Scripture] traced Dovid’s lineage to the name of Rus the Mo’avitess, it returned and traced his lineage to Yehudah’s name.10The symbol of royalty.
