Sha'arei Kedusha

On account of this, the Holy One, blessed is He, and His Indwelling Presence, the Shechinah, withdraw from him. Proof of this is our forefather Yaakov, the choicest of the forefathers,425Midrash Rabba 76:1 and elsewhere. from whom the Holy Spirit (Ru’ach HaKodesh) departed for a period of twenty-two years when Yosef was separated from him and he assumed that he had been devoured by a wild animal. However, when he rejoiced over the tidings that Yosef was alive, the verse states,426Genesis 45:27 “The spirit of Yaakov was revived,” that is, the Holy Spirit (Ru’ach HaKodesh) returned and rested upon him.427Avot d’Rabbi Natan 30:4; Midrash Tanchuma, Veyeishev 2:7; Rashi to Genesis 45:7 ibid., and elsewhere.
