At ngayon ay ilalantad Ko ang kanyang kahihiyan sa paningin ng kanyang mga mangingibig, at walang sinumang makapagliligtas sa kanya mula sa Aking kamay.
Ein Yaakov (Glick Edition)
(Gemara) Had he only one cow? Behold, Rab, and according to some, R. Juda in the name of Rab said that "Twelve thousand calves were the yearly tithes of R. Elazar b. Azariah's herds?" We are taught that "The cow [mentioned in the Mishnah] was not his own, but his neighbor's, and because he did not protest against such an act, it was therefore credited to him." Rab and R. Chanina, R. Jochanan and R. Chabiba, studied together, in the entire Order of Mo'ed (Festivals). Wherever this combination of authorities appears, some eliminate R. Jochanan and insert R. Jonathan. [They said:] "He who has the power to protest [against wrong] in his house and does not do so, will be seized for [the sin of] every one in his house. In the city [where his protest would prevail] he will be seized for the sin of every one in his city. In the entire world [if his protest would be heeded and he does not protest] he will be seized for the sin of the entire world." "And the princes of the exile," said R. Papa, "will be seized for the sin of all Israel, just as R. Chanina said: What means the passage ( Is. 3, 14.) The Lord will enter into Judgment with the elders of His people and their princes. If the princes sinned, (Fol. 55a), what fault have the elders in it? Because the elders did not protest against the princes.'" R. Juda was sitting before Samuel when a certain woman came in, complaining; Samuel paid no attention to her. R. Juda said to him: "Is the master unaware of the passage (Pr. 21, 13.) Whoso stopped his ears from listening to the cry of the poor, he also will cry himself, but shall not he answered." Whereupon Samuel said to him: "Keen scholar, thy chief (I) shall be punished with cold water! but thy chief's chief (the prince of the exile) with boiling water. Behold, Mar Ukba, the chief of the judges sits here [and it is his duty to attend], for it is written (Jer. 21, 12.) O house of David thus hath the Lord said. 'Exercise justice every morning and deliver him, etc' [only to those who have power to do justice]." R. Zeira said to R. Simon: "Let the master reprove those princes of the exile." Whereupon R. Simon responded: "They would pay no heed." "Even if they do not pay heed yet the master ought to reprove them," said R. Zeira, "for R. Acha, the son of R. Chanina, said: 'Never did the Holy One, praised be He! issue a benevolent decree and reconsider it and substitute a bad one, except in the instance written (Ez. 9, 4.) And the Lord said unto him. Pass through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and inscribe a mark upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and who complain because of all the abominations which are done in the midst of it, i.e., the Holy One, praised be He! said unto Gabriel, 'Go and set the sign Tov. in ink upon the foreheads of the righteous, that the destroying angels may have no power over them.' Whereupon the attribute of justice pleaded before the Holy One, praised be He! thus saying, 'Sovereign of the universe, what is the difference between these and the others?' 'These,' said the Lord, 'are perfectly righteous people and the others are grossly wicked people.' Again the attribute of justice pleaded 'Sovereign of the universe, it was their duty to warn them [against wicked actions] and they did not do so.' Whereupon God answered: 'It is revealed and known to me that if they warned them, they would not have heeded them.' Again Justice pleaded: 'Sovereign of the universe, this was known unto Thee, but was it known unto them?' Therefore it is written [immediately following] The aged, young, and little children and women shall ye slay and destroy, but come not near any man upon whom ye find the mark, and from my sanctuary shall ye begin. And it is written (Ib.) Then they began with the elders who were before the house.'" R. Joseph recited [a Baraitha] "Do not read Mikdashi (my sanctuary) but Mimkudashai (those who are holy), i.e., they are the men who fulfilled the whole Torah from the Aleph (the first letter) until the Tov (the last letter); soon [after this is written (Ib.) And behold! six men came from the north, and every man with his weapon of destruction in hand; and one man in the midst of them was clothed in linen, with the paraphernalia of a writer by his side, and placed himself beside the copper altar. Did then the copper altar exist at that time? The Holy One, praised be He! said unto them: "Begin from the place where they used to sing before me [with copper instruments], i.e., from the Levites." And who are the six men [mentioned in the above passage]? R. Chisda said they are Anger, Wrath, Rage, Destruction, Devastation, and Ruin. Why was the letter Tor used? Rab said: "The letter Tov may be explained [as the initial] for both, to live, and to die." And Samuel said: "[The Tov means] Tama (the end), i.e., it has ended [the privilege of relying upon] the merits of our ancestors (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob)." Resh Lakish said the Tov in the last letter on the seal of the Holy One, praised be He! for R. Chanina said: The inscription on the seal of the Holy One, praised be He! is Emeth (Truth)." R. Samuel b. Nachmeini said: "The Tov refers to the men who fulfilled the whole Torah from the Aleph (the first letter) until the Tov (the last letter)."Since when did [the privilege of relying upon] the merits of our ancestors end? Rab said: "Since the days of Hosea b. Be'eri (the prophet); as it is said (Hos. 2, 12.) I will lay bare her disgrace before the eyes of her lovers, and no man shall deliver her out of my hands." Samuel said: "Since the days of Chazel, as is said (II Kings 13, 22.) But King Chazel of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoachaz; and it is written further. And the Lord became gracious unto them, and had mercy on them and turned His regard unto them because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and would not destroy them and he cast them not off from His presence even until now." R. Joshua b. Levi said: "Since the days of Elijah, as it is said (I Kings 18, 36.) And it came to pass at (the time of) the perpetual evening-offering, that Elijah, the prophet, came near, and said, 'O Lord, God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, this day let it be known, etc.'" R. Jochanan said: "Since the days of Hezekiah, as it is said (Is. 9, 6.) For the increase of the government and for peace without end, upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom, to establish if and to support it through justice and righteousness, from henceforth and unto eternity, the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this."
Vayikra Rabbah
Until when does the merit of the patriarchs endure? Rabbi Tanḥuma said in the name of Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Menaḥama, and some say Rabbi Berekhya bar Ḥelbo [said it] in the name of Rava bar Zavda: Until Yehoaḥaz. That is what is written: “But the Lord showed them favor and had mercy on them…until now” (II Kings 13:23) – until now the merit of the patriarchs endured. Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: Until Elijah. That is what is written: “It was at the time of offering up the afternoon offering that Elijah the prophet approached, [and he said: Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today it will be known that You are God in Israel]” (I Kings 18:36).
Shmuel said: Until Hosea. That is what is written: “Now I will reveal her repulsiveness in the eyes of her paramours, and no man will deliver her from My hand” (Hosea 2:12). The man stated here is no one other than Abraham, just as it says: “Now, restore the man’s wife” (Genesis 20:7). And “man” is non other than Isaac, as it is stated: “Who is that man?” (Genesis 24:65). And “man” is none other than Jacob, as it is stated: “Jacob was a complete man” (Genesis 25:27).
Rabbi Yudan said: Until Hezekiah, just as it said: “For abundant authority and for unending peace…[from now, forever; the zealotry of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this]” (Isaiah 9:6).24From that point forward, the zealotry of the Lord would prevail, because the merit of the patriarchs had run out.
Rabbi Yudan said in the name of Rabbi Berekhya: If you see that the merit of the patriarchs has failed and the merit of the matriarchs has faltered, go and cleave to acts of kindness. That is what is written: “For the mountains will move, and the hills will collapse” (Isaiah 54:10); the mountains are the patriarchs and the hills are the matriarchs, and then: “My kindness will not be moved from you, [My covenant of peace shall not collapse]” (Isaiah 54:10).25The verse is understood to mean, if My attribute of kindness is not moved from you, in that you perform acts of kindness for others, My covenant of peace with you will not falter.
Rabbi Aḥa said: The merit of the patriarchs endures forever. Forever, we mention and say: “For the Lord your God is a merciful God, He will neither forsake you, nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your patriarchs” (Deuteronomy 4:31).

Shemot Rabbah
Another matter: “Carve for yourself” – that is what is written: “But now, Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are our Potter” (Isaiah 64:7). The Holy One blessed be He said to Israel: ‘Now I am your Father? When you saw yourselves in distress, you called me: Our Father.’10You relate to me as your Father only when you need me. They said to Him: ‘Yes, as it is stated: “On the day of my distress I sought the Lord”’ (Psalms 77:3). This is analogous to the son of a prominent doctor who encountered a lowly individual and began asking after his welfare. He said to him: ‘My lord, my master, my father.’ His father heard and became angry at him. He said: ‘Let him not appear in my presence, since he called that lowly individual: My father.’ Sometime later, the son fell ill. He said: ‘Please call my father so he will see me.’ They came and told his father. He was immediately overwhelmed with compassion for [his son] and came to him. [The son] said to him: ‘I implore you, my father, look at me.’ He said to him: ‘Now I am your father? Yesterday, you were calling the lowly individual: My father. Now that you are in distress you call me: My father?’ So too, the Holy One blessed be He said to Israel: ‘Now you call me: My Father? Yesterday, you were engaged in idol worship and calling it: My father, as it is stated: “They say to wood: You are my father…but in the time of their misfortune they say: [Arise, and save us]”’ (Jeremiah 2:27). That is why it is stated: “But now, Lord, You are our Father.”
Another matter: “But now, Lord, You are our Father…” (Isaiah 64:7) – that is what is written: “A son will honor his father” (Malachi 1:6) – this is Esau, who honored his father greatly, as he would go out to the fields, hunt game, bring it [home], cook it, and go and feed his father each day. “And a servant his master” (Malachi 1:6) – this is Nevuzaradan, who was called a servant, as it is stated: “Nevuzaradan, captain of the guards, servant of the king of Babylon, came” (II Kings 25:8), as when he came to Jerusalem, he brought with him a likeness of Nebuchadnezzar and would stand before it in awe and reverence like a servant. But you did not honor Me like a father, and you did not fear Me like a master. That is, “if I am a father, where is My honor? If I am a master, where is My fear” (Malachi 1:6)? Rather, when you see yourselves in distress, you call Me your Father. That is why it is stated: “But now, Lord, You are our Father.”
What is, “we are the clay and You are our Potter” (Isaiah 64:7)? Israel said: ‘Master of the universe, You had it written for us: “Behold, like clay in the hand of the potter, so you are in My hand, house of Israel” (Jeremiah 18:6). Therefore, even though we sin and commit provocations before You, do not depart from us. Why? Because “we are the clay and You are our Potter.”’ Come and see this potter, if he crafts a barrel and leaves a pebble in it, when it emerges from the kiln, it leaks from the place of the pebble and loses all the liquid that is placed in it. Who caused the barrel to leak what was inside it? The potter who left the pebble in it. So too, Israel said before the Holy One blessed be He: ‘Master of the universe, You created in us an evil inclination from our youth, as it is stated: “As the inclination of man's heart is evil from his youth” (Genesis 8:21). It causes us to sin before You, but You do not remove this instigator from us. Please remove it from us so we will perform Your will.’ He said to them: ‘That is what I will do in the future,’ as it is stated: “On that day, the utterance of the Lord, I will gather the lame, assemble the outcasts and those whom I harmed [vaasher hare’oti]” (Micah 4:6). What is asher hare’oti? This is the evil inclination [yetzer hara],11Thus, the phrase asher hare’oti is understood to mean, “the evil I have caused,” or, “those I have caused to be evil” via the evil inclination. as it is stated: “As the inclination of man's heart is evil from his youth.”
Another matter: “But now, Lord, You are our Father” (Isaiah 64:7) – that is what is written: “Lord, they sought You in distress” (Isaiah 26:16); when they encounter distress they seek You, as it is stated: “Lord, they sought You in distress.” This is analogous to a prominent official who had children; they adhered to wicked people and strayed to the evil path. He stripped them and cast them out. When they saw themselves in distress, they asked prominent people to ask for mercy on their behalf. Their father said to [the messengers]: ‘What are you requesting?’ They said to him: ‘That you reconcile with your children.’ He said: ‘They are not my children; I do not acknowledge them. Their mother committed adultery and bore them.’ They said to him: ‘You cannot renounce them. Why? Because everyone knows that they are your children, because they resemble you.’
So too, the prominent official is the Holy One blessed be He. His children are Israel, as it is stated: “You are children to the Lord your God” (Deuteronomy 14:1). They mingled with idolaters and strayed to the evil path, as it is stated: “They mingled with the nations and learned their practices” (Psalms 106:35). What did He do to them? He stripped them and cast them away, as it is stated: “They will strip you of your garments” (Ezekiel 23:26), and it is written: “Send them from My presence and let them depart” (Jeremiah 15:1).
When they found themselves in distress they began asking the prophets to ask for mercy on their behalf from the Holy One blessed be He. They began asking for mercy for them, as it is stated: “Have pity upon Your people” (Joel 2:17). The Holy One blessed be He said: ‘On behalf of whom are you asking?’ They said: ‘On behalf of Your children.’ He said to them: ‘They are not My children. If they perform My will they are My children, and if not, they are not My children,’ as it is stated: “Their mother has committed licentiousness, she who conceived them has shamed herself” (Hosea 2:7). Why? “For she said: I will follow my paramours” (Hosea 2:7) – these are idols. Therefore, the Holy One blessed be He said: “Now, I will expose her repulsiveness in the eyes of her paramours” (Hosea 2:12) – these are idols, whom she calls: “Providers of my bread and my water” (Hosea 2:7). But [the idol] has eyes but does not see, ears, but does not hear, and cannot feed itself; how will it feed others? The Holy One blessed be He stripped her, as it is stated: “Lest I strip her bare” (Hosea 2:5).
The prophets said to the Holy One blessed be He: ‘You say that they are not Your children, but they are recognizable by their faces, as it is stated: “All who see them will recognize them, for they are the seed the Lord has blessed” (Isaiah 61:9). Just as it is the way of a father to have mercy on his children even though they have sinned, so too, You must have mercy upon them.’ That is, “but now, Lord, You are our Father” (Isaiah 64:7).
Likewise you find that when they crafted the calf, the Holy One blessed be He became angry at them. Moses came to placate Him, and He called them: Not My people, as it is stated: “Because your people has acted corruptly” (Exodus 32:7). The Holy One blessed be He stripped them, as it is stated: “The children of Israel were stripped of their ornament from Mount Ḥorev” (Exodus 33:6). Moses said: ‘They are Your people and You cannot renounce them,’ as it is stated: “Why, Lord, is Your wrath enflamed against Your people?” (Exodus 32:11). ‘Reconcile with them because they are Your children.’ Immediately He reconciled with them, as it is stated: “The Lord reconsidered” (Exodus 32:14). He showed Moses that He reconciled with them, as He restored the commandments to them, as it is stated: “Carve for yourself.”
