Epistle of Rav Sherira Gaon
And after Rabbi (רבי) established the halacha and our Mishnah, they had a Talmud in which they explained the exactitude of our Mishnah, the specifics, the general rules, and the reasons of the exegeses. As our Rabbis taught: "Run to the Mishnah more than to the Talmud." And we say concerning this: "This itself is contradictory! You said, 'In Talmud—you have no measure greater than this,' and then you said, 'Run to the Mishnah more than to the Talmud'?" Rabbi Yohanan (רבי יוחנן) said: "In the days of Rabbi this Mishnah was taught: 'In Talmud—you have no measure greater than this.' Everyone abandoned the Mishnayot and went after the Talmud. He then expounded for them: 'Always run to the Mishnah more than to the Talmud.'" What did he expound? As Rabbi Yehudah b'Rabbi Ilai (רבי יהודה ברבי אילעאי) expounded: "Declare to My people their transgression, and to the house of Jacob their sins. 'Declare to My people their transgression'—these are Torah scholars whose inadvertent errors become like deliberate sins. 'And to the house of Jacob their sins'—these are the ignorant, for whom even deliberate sins become like inadvertent errors." And this is what we learned: Rabbi Yehudah says, "Be careful in Talmud, for an inadvertent error in Talmud amounts to a deliberate sin."
