Doëg was a man great in Torah. Israel came and asked David, does the showbread supersede the Sabbath231The only place where Doëg is mentioned is 1S. 21–22. Since it is stated in 21:7 that David was given showbread still hot when removed from the Tent of Meeting, it must have been on the Sabbath (Lev. 24:8). Since the High Priest earlier had indicated misgivings about giving him holy bread, he must have convinced the High Priest by learned arguments that what he asked for was permitted.? He told them, its arrangement supersedes the Sabbath, but neither its kneading nor its forming supersedes the Sabbath. Doëg was there and said, who is the one who comes to instruct in my presence232It is implied that Doëg claimed status as the generations’s teacher. That would make asking anybody else for religious instruction in his presence a deadly sin [Gittin 1:2 (Note 94), Ševiˋit 6:1 (Notes 23–30).]? They told him, it is David ben Jesse. He went immediately and counseled Saul, the king of Israel, to kill the priests of Nob, the city of priests. This is what is written2331S. 22:17.: The king said to the runners who stood by him, surround and kill the priests of the Eternal for they also are involved with David, etc., up to they did not inform me. Who were they? Rebbi Samuel bat Rav Isaac said, they were Abner and Amasa. They told him, you have us indebted to you only for this belt234Greek ζωνάριον, τό, “belt”. and this כלינירין235According to Arukh, one should read כַלִינָרִין χαλινάριον “bridle”. Levy prefers to read כְלָנִידִין χλανίδιον “upper garment, blanket.” This fits better into the context. They tell the king that they do not need his salary.. Here they are torn for you. 2331S. 22:17.The king’s servants did not want to kill the priests of the Eternal. The king said to Doyeg. Rebbi Jehudah bar Pazi said, it is written to Doyeg. They told him, you are caught like a fish; you committed a great sin236In Chapter 21, he is called דואג, in Chapter 22 mostly דויג. This must be explained; the second form of the name is derived from דָּג “fish”. The episode is an illustration of the maxim that calumny (לָשׁוֹן הָרַע) is a deadly sin.. 2371S. 22:18. It is stated that Doeg slew 85 men wearing the ephod, a vestment by pentateuchal rules appropriate only for the High Priest.Turn you and smite the priests of the Eternal. Doëg the Edomite turned and smote the priests, etc. But did not Rebbi Ḥiyya state, “one does not appoint two High Priests together”? But this teaches that all of them were qualified for the High Priesthood. How was he removed238What visible sign was given that he had no part in the Future World.? Rebbi Ḥanina and Rebbi Joshua ben Levi: One said, fire came from the Holiest of Holies2391S. 21 makes it clear that there was a Holy Tent at Nob, even though the Ark was still at Qiryat Yearim. and burned around him. But the other said, competent students came to him, they were learning but he was forgetting240Babli 106b., to confirm what is written241Job. 20:15.: The property swallowed by him he throws up; God removes it from his belly.

HALAKHAH: It was stated, “on the silver one”106It is not perfectly clear to what this baraita refers. In the Babli version, there were no marble tables, only silver ones. In the Yerushalmi version, it either can mean that in the vestibule there was a silver table instead of the marble one mentioned in the Mishnah, or that the sentence is not from a baraita, but a quote from the Mishnah, implying that according to R. Joḥanan there was no silver table at all in the Temple, and that wine and flour offerings also had to be kept cool.. Rebbi Yose in the name of Rebbi Samuel bar Rav Isaac; Rebbi Ḥananiah brought it in the name of Rebbi Joḥanan: There was none of silver because it heats107Assuming one speaks about the silver table mentioned in the Mishnah, one has to be careful to keep the flour offering cool lest it become leavened and forbidden in the Temple. If it is indicated that the table in the vestibule was of silver, the question is whether putting the new shew-bread on a warm table would spoil it. Tamid31b.. But did we not state108Babli Yoma21a, in the name of R. Joshua ben Levi., this is one of the wonders which happened in the Temple, that just as they were putting it down hot, so they were removing it hot, [as it is written]109Corrector’s addition from B, missing in ג and deleted by the scribe himself in the Leiden ms., to put hot bread as on the day it was removed1101S. 21:7. The implication is that a warm silver table would be more appropriate for the shew bread than a cold marble one.. Rebbi Joshua ben Levi said, one does not mention wonders111One may not act trusting that a wonder will occur in one’s behalf. Babli Berakhot60a, Yebamot121b, Ḥulin43a.. They asked before Rebbi Ila: If they did not have bread, may they leave it for the coming week112Since the shew-bread has to be exchanged every Sabbath (Lev.24:8), if there was no replacement available is it better to leave the table empty or leave the old bread in its place.? He said to them, it is written113Ex. 25:30.: you shall put on the table the shew-bread before Me permanently. The shew-bread, even disqualified114Since the shew-bread removed from the sanctuary had to be eaten by the Cohanim as most holy sacrifice (Lev.24:9), it must be eaten on the day it becomes available and will be disqualified the next morning, to be burned. But this rule does not apply to bread never removed from the Sanctuary..

Rebbi Abbahu said, Rebbi Joḥanan and Rebbi Simeon ben Laqush disagreeed. One said, one builds and afterwards one dedicates308One builds as if the buildings were profane. Only when the Temple enclosure is complete does one dedicate the Temple area, and when the walls of Jerusalem are rebuilt does one dedicate the city. During the building period one is not restricted by all the rules applying to the Temple area. This is possible since the dedication by Solomon was annulled by the destruction of the Temple. One has to assume that it is possible to dedicate the area of the altar and its enclosure without dedicating the Temple, as done in the time of the first return from Babylonia under Cyrus, Ezra 3:3,6.. The other one said, one dedicates and afterwards one builds309He holds that the dedication by Solomon is permanent. Therefore, anybuilding must be done under restrictive rules (but it can be built in stages, cf. Mishnah Idiut 8:6). If the outline of the Temple enclosure or the original city walls was still visible in Zerubabel’s time, no rebuilding was necessary in order to restore the service of the altar.. For him who says, one builds and afterwards one dedicates, one does not say that the partitions are as if built up310They actually have to be restored before Temple service can be resumed whole or in part.. If one desires to add to the Temple Hall, by which means does one add311In imitation of the rules given for dedication of the city of Jerusalem under Nehemiah, any dedication must involve a sacrifice. The Babli, loc. cit. 299, insists that the sacrifice be used in the place to be dedicated. This leads to a catch-22 situation since a sacrifice can be dedicated only after the dedication of the holy place. There is no reason to assume that the Yerushalmi accepts this reasoning.? By the two loaves312The two loaves of leavened bread dedicated on Pentecost to permit use of new wheat, Lev. 23:17. This is in imitation of the leavened bread used for the dedication of the city, cf. 295. A parallel discussion is in the Babli, Ševuot 15a/b.. Does one dedicate on a holiday313Since the dedication has far-reaching legal consequences, it has the status of an acquisition, which is not acceptable on Sabbath or holiday, Is. 58:13. In addition, the Babli points out that the dedication of the leavened breads is the slaughter of the accompanying well-being sacrifice; then the dedication would not be by bread.? Then by the Shew Bread. Does one dedicate on the Sabbath314The Shew Bread is removed from the sanctuary on the Sabbath, Lev. 24:8. It becomes available for secondary use on the Sabbath, when it cannot be so used.? Then in the night315The following evening, after the end of the Sabbath.. Does one dedicate in the night316Ex. 30:2 prescribes that the Tabernacle be erected during daytime. This rule then is extended to include all building activity of the Temple.? Rebbi Yose ben Rebbi Abun said, with a baked flour offering317The daily flour offering of the High Priest, Lev. 6:12–16.. One understands that on their return from the diaspora they sacrificed and then dedicated. When they entered the Land,318When they entered the Land, they had the Tabernacle which was dedicated in the desert. What one asks here is, how was Solomon’s Temple dedicated? with what did they dedicate? Rebbi Yose ben Rebbi Abun said, with two thanksgiving sacrifices coming from Nob319The priests’ settlement at Nob already was destroyed at the time when the priests from Nob resided at Anatot. The active place of worship was Gibeon, but “Nob and Gibeon” is used as a legal term to indicate the status of holy places after the destruction of Shiloh, before the building of the Temple; cf. Mishnah Zevahim 14:7. and Gibeon.
