Duties of the Heart
Our sages said: "Torah brings to action, action brings to watchfulness, watchfulness brings to zeal, zeal brings to abstinence, abstinence brings to cleanliness, cleanliness brings to purity, purity brings to piety, and piety is greater than all of them, as written 'then You spoke in prophecy to Your pious ones' (Tehilim 89:20)".
Guide for the Perplexed
THE word ram (high) is a homonym, denoting elevation in space, and elevation in dignity, i.e., greatness, honour, and power. It has the first meaning in “And the ark was lifted up (va-tarom) above the earth” (Gen. 7:17); and the latter meaning in “I have exalted (harimoti) one chosen out of the people” (Ps. 89:20); “Forasmuch as I have exalted (harimoti) thee from amongst the dust” (1 Kings 16:2); “Forasmuch as I exalted (harimoti) thee from among the people” (1 Kings 14:7).
