Yet withal he spoke only in love for Israel, as it says, “Ye are a holy people”, etc. (Ibid. 7, 6).

Kuntres Mattan Torah

The chosen people
5. We first need to understand why the Torah was given specifically to the Jewish nation, instead of being given equally to all peoples. Is there a whiff of nationalism here, Heaven forbid? Surely, only someone who lost his mind would think so. In truth, the sages have already addressed this question; this is their intention in their words, “the Holy One, blessed be He, took [the Torah] around to every nation and [those who speak every] language, but they did not accept it” (tractate Avoda Zara 2b), as is well known. But, according to their words, the difficulty lies in the reasoning we were called the chosen nation, as said, “the Lord your God has chosen you…” (Deuteronomy 7:6, Ibid. 14:2), considering that none of the other nations wanted it. Furthermore, the words are difficult in principle. Could the Holy One, blessed be He, have gone with Torah in hand and negotiated with illiterate savages – or did so through his prophets? This is unheard of and unacceptable.

Sha'arei Orah

However, before we begin explaining, we first must inform you that the Great Name HaShem-יהו״ה, blessed is He, is the Singular Name-Shem HaMeyuchad-שם המיוחד. It is called the Singular Name-Shem HaMeyuchad-שם המיוחד, because the Name HaShem-יהו"ה, blessed is He, is singular and unique to the Jewish people alone, whereas the other nations of the world have no portion in Him whatsoever. Rather, the angelic ministers of the other nations adhere to His other holy names and titles, which are like wings or garments of the Name HaShem-יהו״ה, blessed is He. It is those titles and garments that the angelic ministers of the nations hold on to and are sustained by. However, not a single one of them has any direct connection to the Name HaShem-יהו״ה, blessed is He, whatsoever, but only to His other names and titles, which are His garments. Rather, the Name HaShem-יהו״ה, blessed is He, as He is alone, is singular to the Jewish people only. This is the secret of the verse,161Deuteronomy 14:2 “HaShem-יהו״ה has chosen you for Himself to be a treasured people from amongst all the peoples on the face of the earth.” This is likewise the secret of the verse,162Deuteronomy 32:9 “For HaShem’s-יהו״ה portion is His people.” HaShem-יהו״ה thus placed His name upon the Jewish people, and His Name is proclaimed upon them alone, whereas none of the nations who serve false gods have any portion in Him, whatsoever. This is the meaning of the verse,163Micah 4:5 “For all the peoples will go, each man in the name of his god, but we will go in the Name HaShem-יהו״ה our God, forever and ever.”
