תּלמוד אויף משלי 3:12

If he attributed them to neglect of Torah without finding any justification, it is certain that his sufferings are chastenings of love ; as it is said, "For whom the Lord loveth He correcteth" (Prov. iii. 12).

R. Abba the son of R. Hiyya b. Abba said to them : Thus declared R. Hiyya b. Abba in the name of R. Johanan : Both of them are to be considered chastenings of love ; as it is said, "For whom the Lord loveth He correcteth" (Prov. iii. 12).
