The Third Beit HaMikdash
“In the vestibule of [this] gate, there were two tables on the one side and two tables on the other side to slaughter near them the burnt-offering, the sin-offering, and the guilt-offering.”1Yechezkel 40:39. The verse mentions offerings that are of the highest order of sanctity, קדשי קדשים, which must be slaughtered in the northern part of the courtyard. This verse should be understood as follows:
“In the vestibule of [this] gate, there were two tables on the one side” on the east “and two tables on the other side” on the west “to slaughter near them2Tosafos Yom Tov explains the word אליהם in the verse as meaning עליהם, as Radak states in his commentary. Although עליהם is usually translated as “on them”, it is difficult to imagine sacrificial animals being slaughtered on the tables. Metzudos explains that in this context the word אליהם appears to mean, “next to them,” i.e., the sacrificial animals were slaughtered next to the tables mentioned in the verse. See the interpretation of ועליו in Bamidbar 2:20 by Rashi and others. the burnt-offering, the sin-offering, and the guilt-offering.”
