Tafsiran Amos 9:9: Tze'enah Ure'enah & Rashi

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“For I will give the order, etc.” [9:9]. The Holy One said; I do not want to completely destroy Israel, but I want to disperse them in exile among the nations, like a person who shakes and sifts flour through a sieve. The small clumps and pebbles remain in the sieve and do not fall out. They shake and are thrown around here and there in the sieve. In the same way, Israel will also be driven from one city to the other city.

Rashi

For behold I command—to exile them among all the nations, an unusually great scattering.

Rashi

as it is shaken—What they sift with a sieve after the fine bran falls out of it, and there remains the coarse [bran], which cannot come out, and then the one who shakes [it], shakes with all his might.

Rashi

it is shaken—by another, and it is impossible to read יָנוּעַ, since that denotes a thing that moves by itself.
