“And the altar hearth, four cubits” [43:15]. The altar was four cubits high. Our sages say: why is the altar called Ariel? It is because the fire that came down on the altar from Heaven had the image of a lion, the king of beasts.³Mezudat Zion, Ezekiel, 43:15. The altar was twenty-four cubits long and twenty-four cubits wide.
