Midras Ayub 14:18: Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Aggadat Bereshit, Bereshit Rabbah & Midrash Tehillim

(Gen. 20:1:) THEN ABRAHAM JOURNEYED FROM THERE TO THE LAND OF THE NEGEV. This text is related (to Job 14:18): AND YET A FALLING MOUNTAIN WILL CRUMBLE.⁹²M. Pss. 53:2; cf. Gen. R. 52:1ff. This is Sodom and its companion cities, as stated (in Gen. 19:23f.): THE SUN HAD RISEN UPON THE EARTH…. THEN THE LORD RAINED DOWN < UPON SODOM AND UPON GOMORRAH BRIMSTONE AND FIRE … AND HE DESTROYED THOSE CITIES >. R. Samuel bar Nahmani said: Woe to those wicked people because they cause a place of mercy to become a place of retribution. Wherefore, note how David gives praise⁹³Gk.: kalos. (in Ps. 148:1, 7f.): HALLELUJAH! PRAISE THE LORD FROM THE HEAVENS…. < PRAISE THE LORD … FIRE AND HAIL >…. But there is no fire there < in the heavens >, no hail, and no brimstone. Our colleague R. Ariste (citing Ps. 96:6) said: HONOR AND MAJESTY ARE BEFORE HIM. Where is there a place for retribution? From on earth, as stated (in Ps. 148:7) PRAISE THE LORD FROM THE EARTH, YOU SEA MONSTERS AND ALL OCEAN DEEPS. Ergo: < Retribution is > FROM THE EARTH. < Then > how can it be written (in Gen. 19:24): THEN THE LORD RAINED DOWN … < FROM THE LORD OUT OF THE HEAVENS > ? Simply to teach you < this >: From the beginning when they were created, the Holy One gave a decree concerning them and said to them: In accordance with how you shall see the creatures, so let it be done to them.⁹⁴Cf. Mark 4:24 & //s; Galatians 6:7f. A parable: To what is the matter comparable? To a caldron⁹⁵Gk.: miliarion; Lat.: miliarium. of gold. < Whoever > wanted warm water would find < some > within it. < Whoever > wanted it cold would take < some > out of it. < Whoever > wanted burning coals would take < some > out of it. So < also > the Holy One said to the heavens: Whatever you see, do. For the Sodomites and the children of Esau there would be brimstone and fire; for Israel, dew. Thus it is stated (in Micah 5:6 [7]): THEN THE REMNANT OF JACOB SHALL BE IN THE MIDST OF MANY PEOPLES, LIKE DEW. The Holy One said: What need do I have for these people? He immediately destroyed them, as stated (in Gen. 19:25): AND HE DESTROYED THOSE CITIES…. Ergo, it says (in Job 14:18): AND YET A FALLING MOUNTAIN WILL CRUMBLE, AND THE ROCK IS REMOVED FROM ITS PLACE. Now there is no rock but Abraham, as stated (in Is. 51:1f.): LOOK UNTO THE ROCK FROM WHICH YOU WERE HEWN … < LOOK UNTO ABRAHAM >. < He is the one > who journeyed from his place, as stated (in Gen. 20:1): THEN ABRAHAM JOURNEYED FROM THERE < TO THE LAND OF THE NEGEV >….

Chapter 25: Torah [1] And Abraham journeyed from there (Genesis 20:1). This is what the scripture said, "But the mountain falls away and the rock is moved from its place" (Job 14:18). What is written above? "The sun rises and sets, and the Lord brings rain, and He turns it all around" (Genesis 19:23-24). Abraham said, "I did not dwell opposite Sodom and its surrounding cities because they did not receive the passersby and those returning, since Sodom and Gomorrah did not merit the poor, as it is written, 'And the hand of the poor and needy did not find anything' (Ezekiel 16:49), and it is written, 'Now the people of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly' (Genesis 13:13). Wicked to one another and sinners openly with forbidden relationships. And before the Lord, greatly, in bloodshed. Therefore, Abraham sat opposite it so that he could receive the passersby and those returning. Once the Holy One, blessed be He, overturned them because of their sins, Abraham said, "Why should I sit here? There is no longer any merit here, so behold, I am going to another place," as it is written, "But the mountain falls away and the rock is moved from its place" (Job 14:18),"And there is no mountain except for Sodom, as it is said 'He moves mountains, and they do not know where He overturned them in His anger' (Job 9:5). 'And the Rock shall be moved from its place' (Job 18:4), this refers to Abraham, as it is said 'Look to the rock from which you were hewn' (Isaiah 51:1), therefore it is said 'And Abraham journeyed from there.'"

“The elder gave birth to a son, and called his name Moav; he is the ancestor of the Moavites to this day” (Genesis 19:37).
“The younger too gave birth to a son, and called his name Ben-Ami, he is the ancestor of Benei Amon to this day” (Genesis 19:38).
“The elder gave birth to a son…” – Rabbi Yudan in the name of Rabbi Aivu: The elder daughter, because she demeaned her father’s honor and called his [her son’s] name Moav, meaning from father,³⁵By calling her son Moav she made the act of incest public, which demeaned her father’s honor. the verse said: “Do not besiege Moav, and do not provoke war with them” (Deuteronomy 2:9) – you may not wage war with them, but you may breach their riverbeds, or burn their stacks of grain with fire.³⁶You may intimidate them in other ways, as long as you do not wage war against them. But the younger daughter, because she spared her father’s honor and said: “And she called his name Ben-Ami” – meaning the son of the one who was together with me, the verse states: “Do not besiege them and do not provoke them” (Deuteronomy 2:19) – at all.
Rabbi Yehuda ben Rabbi Simon and Rabbi Ḥanin said in the name of Rabbi Yoḥanan: Lot’s daughters were going to violate a transgression,³⁷This opinion maintains that Lot’s daughters acted immorally. yet they were remembered favorably [by God].³⁸God granted them pregnancies and great nations emerged from them. By what merit? It was due to the merit of Moav – the one who [mi] is the father [av], as it is stated in Abraham’s regard: “For I have made you the father of a multitude of nations” (Genesis 17:5).
