Rabbeinu Bahya

תשאו את עון כהונתכם, “you shall bear any guilt connected with your priesthood.” The meaning of the verse is: “if you do not carefully guard the priesthood any guilt arising from negligence will be borne by you. The reason the Torah adds: “you and your sons with you in front of the Tent of Testimony” (verse 2), is that both you and your sons are always perceived as being in My (G’d’s) presence all the time. Sifri Korach 116 explains that the priests are responsible for what occurs inside the Sanctuary whereas the Levites are responsible for what occurs around it outside in the sacred precincts. Each group was expected to mount guards at night, etc.

Ramban

WHEREFORE LEVI HATH NO PORTION. The purport thereof is234In view of the fact that Ramban explained the preceding verse as referring only to the priests, the question arises: why does the verse before us explain that the Levites have no portion in the Land, when only the priests were discussed in this section? Ramban answers, “The purport thereof is etc.” that because they all [i.e., the Levites] minister to and assist the priests in their [Divine] Service, since every part of the Sanctuary pertained to the offerings, [therefore, the whole tribe of Levi was not free to devote itself to the cultivation and development of the Land; therefore they received no portion therein]. And so He said [to Aaron], And thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou near with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee.235Numbers 18:2.

Divide in half. The rest of the community [received half because they] were withheld from the war only due to Moshe’s command, and the warriors were victorious in their merit and prayer. Just as they sent one part of fifty to the army, so too, they gave to the Levites one part of fifty to honor Hashem. The warriors gave one part of five hundred to Elozor as reward for Pinchas who went with them, and Hashem helped them through him.
