Sastra Bait Kedua Imamat 19:11: On the Special Laws

On the Special Laws

§ 39. τῶν … In support of the translation somewhat doubtfully given in the text it may be pointed out that Philo evidently sees in Lev. 19:11, 12 something like the rhetorical figure, technically called “the ladder” (κλῖμαξ), in which at each stage the crucial word of the preceding stage is repeated. (See Ernesti, Lex. Rhet.) A similar example in Demosthenes (speaking of the process by which a quarrel rises to bloodshed) runs Of course in Lev. itself it is not a proper “climax,” as the πρότερον is not repeated before the ἑπόμενον, but Philo’s exposition takes that form.
