Remember what Amalek did to you on the way, as you came out of Egypt! How he encountered you on the way, and he cut off all the weak ones [who were straggling] behind you, when you were weary and exhausted; and he did not fear God.³Other commentators say that these words refer to the Jewish people, who did not fear God. When Adonoy, Your God, will relieve you from all your enemies around you, in the land which Adonoy, your God, gives you as a possession to inherit; you shall eradicate the memory of Amalek from beneath the heavens. Awesome King! How long will You imprison the children of Zorach and Peretz, the twins of Tamar?⁹The sons of Judah from where the royal House of David were descended and from whence the Messiah will come.
