Tosefta Sotah

The Elders say (Deut. 21:7), "Our hands did not spill this blood, and our eyes did not see." The priests say (Deut. 21:8), "Absolve Your people Israel that You redeemed, O God, etc." And the Holy Spirit says, "And they shall be absolved of the blood." Three utterances, [and] whoever said this did not say that. Similarly, you could say [that in connection with the spies' report] (Num. 13:27-28), "We came to the land where you sent us," said Joshua; Caleb said; "Let us go up and possess it"; the [other] spies said, "However, powerful are the people settled in the land." Three utterances, this next to that, [and] whoever said this did not say that. Similarly, you could say [regarding the matter of Judah and Tamar] (Gen. 38:25-26), "And she said, 'Pray recognize, to whom does this seal [and these cords and this staff] belong?,'" said Tamar; "She is more righteous than I," said Judah; and the Holy Spirit says, "And he did not know her again." Three [utterances], this next to that, [and] whoever said this did not say that, and whoever said that did not say the other. Similarly, you could say [regarding the battle of Shiloh] (I Sam. 4:8-9), "Woe to us! Who will save us from the hand of this mighty God?" said the righteous among them; the evil ones among them said, "These are the gods who struck [the Egyptians] with ten plagues, and they paid for His plagues in the desert"*אלה הם האלים המכים עשר מכות, ושלמו מכותיו במדבר (following Lieberman); and the brave ones among them said, "Gird yourselves and be like men, O Philistines!" Three utterances, this next to that, etc. Similarly, you can say [regarding Sisera's mother awaiting his return] (Judges 5:28-31), "Through the window she gazed, etc.," said the mother of Sisera; "The wisest of her ladies-in-waiting [answered her], etc."; "Can they not be found dividing up the spoils, etc.?", "Thus may all Your enemies perish, O God, etc.," said the Holy Spirit. Three utterances, this next to that, etc. Similarly, you can say (Jer. 26:18-24): "Micah the Morashite would prophesize in the days of Hezekiah, King of Judah." And what would he prophesize? "And he said to all the people of Judah, saying, 'Thus said the Lord of Hosts: Zion will be a plowed field, and Jerusalem will be a heap of ruins, and the Temple Mount will be like the [idolatrous] high-places in the forest.' And did Hezekiah the King of Judah and all of Judah put him to death? And did he not he fear God, and beseech the face of God, and God repented of the evil that he had spoken about them? And shall we cause such a great evil to be done to our souls?" Thus said the upright people among them. And the evildoers among them said, "And there was also a man prophesying in the name of God, Uriah ben Shemayah from Kiryat HaY'arim, and he prophesied about this land and this city, the same as all the words of Jeremiah. And King Jehoiakim and all his mighty men and all the people heard his words and the King sought to kill him. And Uriah heard and was afraid and fled and came to Egypt, and King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt; Elnatan ben Achbor and other men with him [went] to Egypt. And they took Uriah from Egypt and brought him to King Jehoiakim, and he had him cut down by the sword, and he threw his carcass into the burial pit of the common people." They said, just like Uriah prophesized and was killed, so too Jeremiah must be killed, as it is said, "But the hand of Achikam ben Shafan was on Jeremiah [protecting him] so that he could not be given into the hands of the people to kill him." This entire section is a mixture of utterances, and the one who said this did not say that. Similarly, you can say (Nahum 1:1-4), "An oracle against the people of Nineveh, a book of prophecy of Nahum the Elkoshite: The Lord is a jealous and vengeful God, vengeful, etc."; "God is slow to anger, and of great forbearance, etc."; "He rebukes the sea, etc." This entire section is a mixture of utterances, and the one who said this did not say that. Similarly, you can say (Ps. 58:1-2), "For the conductor, on the tashchet, of David, a michtam: Do you truly speak righteously, etc."; "Even in your heart you plot wickedness, etc."; "The wicked are estranged from the womb, etc." This entire section is a mixture of utterances, and the one who said this did not say that. Similarly, you can say (Songs 8:5-6), "Under the apple tree I roused you," said the Holy Spirit; "Set me as a a seal upon your heart," said the Congregation of Israel; "For love is as powerful as death," said the idolaters. Three utterances, this next to that, etc.
