“May your house be like the house of Peretz” [4:12]. Like Tamar who won Judah and may God give you the same from this young woman. Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. They had relations and God gave her that she became pregnant and she had a son. Our sages say that the verses in the Book of Ruth always begin with “vavs,” but eight verses do not begin with “vavs.” This teaches us that Ruth was a gentile who joined Israel, those who observe circumcision on the eighth day. The vav means woe. He meant to say, woe to the generation in which the judges are judged. The sages say that he slept with her the same night and she became pregnant and Boaz died the same night. The verse also shows us that a woman has a child in two hundred and sixty-one days, equal to the numerical value of the word “herayon” [pregnancy].78Yalkut Shimoni, Ruth, Remez, 608.

Like the house of Peretz. From whom they were descended.9Otherwise they should have blessed Bo’az to be like Ephrayim and Menashe.
