Facing them, he saw the walkways of the Entrance Hall, with its corridors15See Yechezkel 41:15 and sec. 50 above. and two mighty columns:16See Yechezkel 40:48-49 and sections 47-48 above.
The Third Beit HaMikdash
“And He brought me to the Vestibule (the Ulam) of the House…. There were steps by which one ascended to it.”1Yechezkel 40:48-49. With regard to the Second Beis HaMikdash, the Mishnah teaches:2Middos 3:6. “There were 22 cubits between the Ulam and the Altar and there were twelve steps there. Each step was 1/2 a cubit high and one cubit wide.” Rambam had a different version of the text which stated that the steps were also 1/2 a cubit wide, as stated in sec. 2. As explained in sec. 26-27, it appears that in the Future Beis HaMikdash there will be 34 cubits between the Ulam and the Altar. Consult that section.
The Third Beit HaMikdash
“The length of the Ulam” – from north to south – “was 20 cubits.”1Yechezkel 40:49. “The width of the gate was 3 cubits on one side and 3 cubits on the other side.”2Ibid.:48. The intent is that the entire entrance to the Ulam in the Future Beis HaMikdash will be 20 cubits wide. There will be 3 cubits at each end that will be closed, leaving 14 cubits of open space.
