Derush Chiddushei HaLevanah

I maintain that the proper version of the passage is the one found in Yalkut Shimoni,39Yalkut Shimoni (Bereishis, sec. 8) quotes the passage from Chulin under discussion. The text of Yalkut Shimoni possessed by Tosfos Yom Tov did not mention Shmuel among those who are small. The standard published text of Yalkut Shimoni does, however, mention Shmuel. which mentions only Yaakov and David, for verses referring to them as “small” are found in Scripture. The version of the text that mentions Shmuel HaKatan i.e.”Shmuel the small” is far-fetched and strange, for such a phrase is not found in Scripture, and one is forced to say that it refers to Shmuel HaKatan mentioned in Pirkei Avos as quoting the verse, “Do not rejoice at the downfall of your enemies.”40Avos 4:19, citing Mishlei 24:17. Also, were that the case, Shmuel HaKatan should be mentioned after David, not before. Thus, the inclusion of Shmuel is obviously an error, which must have been made by a student who erroneously edited the text of the Talmud in his confusion.
