וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ צִּ֖יץ זָהָ֣ב טָה֑וֹר וּפִתַּחְתָּ֤ עָלָיו֙ פִּתּוּחֵ֣י חֹתָ֔ם קֹ֖דֶשׁ לַֽיהוָֽה׃

און זאָלסט מאַכן אַ שטערנבלעך פֿון רײנעם גאָלד, און אױסקריצן אױף אים װי אױסקריצונגען פֿון אַ זיגל ”הײליק צו גאָט“.

The diadem was inscribed “Holy for the Eternal”, “holy” below and “Eternal” above27The diadem worn by the High Priest when officiating; Ex. 28:36. As explained in the parallels in the Babli (Šabbat 63b, Sukkah 5a) and in Yerushalmi Megillah1:11(71d 1. 57) only the four letters of the Name were in the upper line and קדוש ל on the bottom., like a king who sits on his throne28Greek καθέδριον. τὸ , "small chair".. And similarly, “one” below and the Name above29On the lot was inscribed not only “for the Eternal” but “one for the Eternal”.. Rebbi Eleazar ben Rebbi Yose said, I saw it in Rome30He reports to have seen the High Priest’s vestment in Rome, Meˋilah 17b. and it was written on it in one line, “Holy for the Eternal”.

MISHNAH: The High Priest officiates in eight garments and the common priest61Greek ὶδιώτης, ὁ. in four, in shirt, trousers, turban, and belt62Ex. 28:40,42.. The High Priest in addition wears breastplate, vest, coat, and diadem63Ex. 28:4,36,42.. In these one asks Urim and Tummim, but one does not ask for common people, only for a king, or the Court, or one on whom rest the needs of the public.

Sukkah

But why should we not derive it from the golden headplate (ציץ), as it was taught: The tzitz was in the shape of a plate of gold two finger-breadths broad and stretching from ear toear, and upon it were engraved two lines, Yod and Heh above, and Kodesh [followed by a] Lamed below, and R. Eliezer son of R. Yose said, I saw it in Rome and it had Kodesh Ladonai on one line.
