THE ETERNAL BLESS THEE, AND KEEP THEE. By way of the Truth, [the mystic teachings of the Cabala], the meaning thereof is because “the blessing” comes from on High [downward], and the meaning of shmirah [“keeping” — and He ‘keep’ thee] is that you should “keep” it, like Remember [the Sabbath-day],115Exodus 20:5. See Ramban there. and ‘Shamor’ (Keep) the Sabbath-day.116Deuteronomy 5:12. Furthermore, the Great Name will make His countenance that watches over you shine [upon you].117Verse 25. And so did the Rabbis say in the Sifre:118Sifre Naso 41. “Rabbi Nathan says: [The Eternal make His countenance shine upon thee.] This is a reference to the light of the Divine Presence.” And He be gracious unto thee, that you may find favor in His sight, similar to that which the Rabbis have said [that when G-d completed the creation of the world He said]: “My world! My world! Would that you will find favor in My sight all the time [as at this moment]!”119Bereshith Rabbah 9:4. “That is to say: ‘I wish that man would not spoil the celestial spheres through which his blessings descend after I endowed him with freedom of action’” (Beiur Ha’lvush to Ricanti, quoting the language of Ramban). Furthermore, the Eternal lift up His countenance to the heavens above and give thee peace120Verse 26. — all in your house. And so the Rabbis said in the Sifre:121Sifre Naso 42. “[And He give thee peace.] Rabbi Nathan said: This is a reference to the peace of the kingdom of David.” So shall they put My Great Name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them,122Verse 27. for it is I that speaketh, behold, here I am,123Isaiah 52:6. and peace.124Ricanti in quoting the language of Ramban does not mention “and peace.” In the commentary of Ma’or V’shamesh, however, it is explained as meaning: “with the consent of peace.”

יברכך, with material wealth. The reason this is the first of the blessing is explained by our sages in Avot 3,17 אם אין קמח אין תורה, “if there is no flour, (no economic base) a Torah environment cannot flourish.”

יברכך וישמרך. "May the Lord bless you and preserve you." The order of 1) the blessing, 2) preserving the people who received the blessing, means that the degree of שמירה, protection, will be commensurate with the extent of the blessing previously received. Moreover, there is an implication here that the blessing will be so comprehensive that G'd has to make a special effort that all of it will be preserved. The wording יברכך may also imply that there should be no negative side effects to this blessing such as is referred to in Deuteronomy 8,12: "lest you eat, become sated etc…. and become haughty, forgetting the Lord your G'd."

V. 24. יברכך וגו׳. Da dies יברכך durch den Nachsatz וישמרך ergänzt wird, so bezieht sich wohl die hier ausgesprochene ברכה zunächst auf solche Güter, hinsichtlich derer wir, wenn sie schon gewährt sind, der שמירה, des Schutzes bedürfen, dass sie uns erhalten bleiben, dass deren Besitz uns wahrhaft zum Heile gereiche. So auch ספרי (Dewarim 28, 3): בברכה המפורשת ברוך אתה בעיר וברוך אתה בשדה ברוך טנאך ומשארתך וגו׳ יברכך ד׳ בנכסים וישמרך בנכסים ,וישמרדך בגוף ,וישמרך מיצר הרע וישמרך שלא ישלטו אחרים עליך ,וישמרך מן המזיקים. Es bildet somit das Gedeihen aller leiblichen und materiellen Güter und der Schutz vor allem Schadenden den Inhalt dieses ersten Segensatzes.

Yebarejejá H veishmereja = Que D’s te bendiga y te cuide: Las iniciales de estas 3 palabras suman 26 (iud=10, iud=10, vav=6), como el Nombre de letras de Dios (iud=10, hei=5, vav=6, hei=5). Y las últimas letras de las tres palabras suman 45 (jaf=20, hei=5, jaf=20), como el Nombre Divino de 45 palabras. Por eso dice “Que Dios ‘cuide’ tu salida y tu venida” (Salmos 121:8). 3 palabras tiene este pasuk, para evocar el mérito de los 3 Patriarcas. 15 letras tiene este pasuk, porque durante 15 años llegaron a vivir los 3 juntos. Y sumando el mérito de las 12 tribus con los 3 patriarcas, da 15. Yebarejejá = que te bendiga: Por mérito de Abraham, como está escrito: “Y Dios bendijo a Abraham en todo” (Bereshit 24:1). El pasuk tiene 3 palabras, como las 3 Berajot que recibió Abraham: “vaabarejá”, “veheié berajá” y “vaabarejá mebarejeja” (12:2-3)

יברכך ה' וישמרך, “may the Lord bless you and keep you safe;” you should be blessed with material wealth, and be able to fulfill many of the commandments of the Torah. The word שמר is interpreted in the same way in Exodus 12,17, ושמרתם את המצות, “you are to observe the commandments.” (compare Mechilta there) An alternate interpretation: יברך, “may He bless you with sons;” וישמרך, “and may He bless you with daughters,” (who require much more protection.)

"May God bless you." Included in this is whatever is appropriate for each person to be blessed with. As is written in Deuteronomy 16:16: "they shall not appear before the LORD empty...according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which He hath given thee." The blessing will be according to the blessing that he was blessed with until then: For one who deals in Torah, in his study. For one who deals in commerce, in his merchandise. Thus is included in this general blessing "May God bless you" an additional blessing for each person about what he has.

וישמרך AND MAY HE GUARD THEE — that no robbers come upon thee to take away thy property. For a human being who gives a present to his servant cannot guard him against everybody, and if a band of robbers attack him and take it away, what pleasure can he, then, derive from this present?! The Holy One, blessed be He, however, both gives and guards — against everybody (Midrash Tanchuma, Nasso 10). Many Midrashic interpretations are given of this verse in the Sifrei (Sifrei Bamidbar 40).

"And protect you." For every blessing requires protection so that it does not become an obstacle, God forbid. A master of Torah needs protection from pride, desecration of God's name and the like. And similarly, that he not forget his learning. A property owner needs protection that his wealth not be to his detriment, like Korach and Navot the Jezreelite and the like. And similarly, protection from theft and loss. And likewise for everything that is in need of blessing, protection from whatever causes trouble is requested.
