Rashi
A pestilence went before Him I found in a Midrash Aggadah: At the time the Holy One, blessed be He, gave the Torah to Israel, He drove away the Angel of Death to divert him to other things, lest he stand to accuse and say, “You are giving the Torah to a nation that is destined to deny you at the end of forty days?”
Rashi
and sparks went out at His feet Fiery angels came with Him to Sinai.

“Before Him went pestilence” [3:5]. When the Holy One was ready to give the Torah, He wanted to banish the angel of death so that he should not speak ill of Israel. He should not say, how could You give the Torah to Israel? They will make the Golden Calf after forty days. Therefore, the Holy One chased away the angel of death, but other burning angels were with the Holy One on Mount Sinai.5Rashi, Habakkuk, 3:5.
