Komentaryong Sumisipi para sa Joel 1:17

Ibn Ezra

the term mamzer has been explained by our Sages, of blessed memory, to denote offspring that come from incest [Yevamot 49a]. The two mem ’s are extraneous, like the mem ’s in “the barns are broken down” [Joel 1: 17]. Others claim that it is the name of a nation, since we see the verse “a mamzer shall dwell in Ashdod” [Zechariah 9: 6] — and it is unlikely that Israel would be mentioned in uncomplimentary terms, even in a passage dealing with Messianic times (the Aramaic translator there gives a nonliteral translation).

אגרף Some hard thing to strike with.5A. V., First. In this sense it is used in Rabbinical literature. Comp. בעלי אגרפין men with force (Pesachim 53); compare besides באגרף (Ex. 21:18).6In his commentary on Ex. 21:18, I. E. mentions this comparison in the name of Saadiah, while the other explanation, introduced here by the words, Others render it, is given, in his abridged commentary on Ex. 21:18, as his own, introduced by the word ויתכן, It is also right to say. Others7Very probably R. Jonah is meant, whose explanation is quoted in the commentary of I. E. on Ex. 21:18; he derived the word from the root גרף to sweep. render it a piece of hard earth, and connect it with מגרפותיהם their clods (Joel 1:17).

join Heb. יִפָרֵדוּ. Jonathan translates מִסְתַייעָן from סִיעָה, ‘a company,’ that is, they join with them (the harlots) in drinking wine. Now Menahem [Machbereth Menahem p. 145] connects it with עָבְשוּ פְרוּדוֹת “the wine barrels decay” (of Joel 1:17) where they (פְרוּדוֹת) are wine barrels.

those gathered to the sword Heb. מְגוּרֵי, a gathering of nations coming to the sword were around My people. So did Jonathan render מְגוּרֵי, related to the word in (Prov. 10: 5): “An intelligent son gathers (אוֹגֵר) in the summer”; (ibid. 6:8), “She gathers (אָגְרָה) her food in the harvest”; (Joel 1:17), “garners (מַמְּגֻרוֹת) are demolished”; (Haggai 2:19), “The seed is still in the granary (בַּמְגוּרָה).” Menachem, however, connected it to the word for fear, like (Num. 22:3): “And Moab became terrified (וַיָגָר).”
