Charity and Justice (Tzedakah): Caring for the Poor

Tzedakah is usually translated as charity, but the word is built on tzedek, justice. Giving is not generosity you may choose to offer; it is something you owe. Seven days through the laws and the voices that build that obligation: the stranger and the widow protected in Exodus, the corners of the field left standing in Leviticus, the open hand and the release of debts in Deuteronomy, the worker paid before sundown, the fast Isaiah says God actually wants, and the promise that whoever is gracious to the poor lends to God Himself.
